The name of the Soultzmatt village derives from " Sulz " or " mineral spring ", and from " Matte " or " meadow ".
As of its origin, the village belonged to the seigneury of Rouffach and to the bishop of Strasbourg.
As of the 13th till the 16th century, several vassals' families of the bishop built there up to seven different castles: the cemetery and the village were probably fortified moreover. Six mineral springs were discovered there at the 15th century.
They have been exploited till the fire of the water cure establishment in 1893.
Today Soultzmatt's water is marketed under the label " Eaux de Table ", or tablewater.

One can there still see a menhir said " Langstein " or " Long Stone " close to " Schaeferthal " or " Shepherds' Valley ".
Carolingians sarcophagi are near the church.
Houses of Renaissance style. The fountain also goes back to 1663.
The castle of " Wagenburg " also dates him from the 16th century.
The church " Saint Sebastien " with bell-tower and northern collateral of Roman style, chorus and furnace bridges of the 18th century, southern collateral going back to 1496.
Tombstones. An Annunciation of the 15th century. The vault of the " Schaefertahl " or " Shepherds' Valley " goes back to 1511, and was restored in 1950.
